Contents:
The purpose of this course is to introduce the history of Jewish and Christian interpretation of the Hebrew Bible / Old Testament. Using examples from the Torah / Pentateuch, we will explore the diversity of exegetical approaches and interpretive literature in Jewish and Christian traditions. The focus will be on how pre-modern interpreters have read, retold and rewritten the biblical text, and what this implies about their understandings of the nature of biblical literature itself.
Recommended reading list:
Weekly readings will be provided in the Semesterapparat, but all students should bring their own copy of the Christian Bible with Apocrypha (in German or English).
Additional information:
Lectures and discussion will be held in English and German, and students are welcome to speak and write in either language.
