Through the decades, African American cinema has been a consistently and profoundly dynamic medium. Spike Lee and many others were pioneers who paved the way and set the tone for a new vision of black cinema. This advanced research seminar will not discuss, however, contemporary African American cinema, but look back at more than 100 years of black cinema history. We will focus on the newly released collection Pioneers of African American Cinema from the archives of the Library of Congress. This set is devoted to the so-called race movies that featured allblack casts and were largely made by black filmmakers for black audiences beginning around World War I and continuing through the mid-20th century. We will discuss this first alternative American cinema and explore how it engages fundamental social, economic, and cultural issues of American life.
