The method of effective field theory (EFT) provides a systematic approach to multi-scale problems. An effective field theory uses the appropriate degrees of freedom to describe the phenomena at a given energy scale, while all information from degrees of freedom only relevant at much higher scales are encoded in the low energy constant of the EFT. These concepts lead to a large variety of phenomenological applications in modern particle physics.
In the theory of strong interactions, with its hugely different behaviour at the various energy scales, EFT descriptions such as heavy-quark-effective theory, and chiral perturbation theory, play an important role.
The lectures introduce the basic ideas of the effective field theory approach like relevant and irrelevant operators, construction of the theory based on symmetries, renormalization. The lectures also provide a deeper understanding of its most important applications in modern research fields.
