Contents: Billions of people use social media like Facebook, Instagram and YouTube on a regular basis. Social media have transformed the public sphere and reconfigured social practices. This seminar investigates social media from a sociological point of view. How did social media emerge? Why do we use them? What is the role of data, algorithms, platforms and user-generated content in social media? How do social media relate to mass media? Are social media tools of emancipation or oppression? In this seminar, you will read and discuss academic texts on social media. You will learn how social media shape contemporary society. The seminar will be held in English, the language in which most sociological texts are written today. The event is therefore an excellent opportunity to train and refine your English skills.
