Contents:
In our seminar we are exploring the field of media geography by focusing on theoretical fundamentals and central topics. Thereby, the reference to everyday life of media geographical theories and their globally networked effectiveness is of particular importance. The seminar consists of three major parts:

1)     In each session (except the ‘joint preparation’ sessions), there will be ‘text expert teams’ (2-3 persons) who prepare one of the provided texts below. Each team prepares a text (response paper) and should be able to present it during the session. The texts for the next session will be distributed at the end of each meeting.

2)     Each participant has to host a session. The ‘host’ will prepare the thematic focus of the session, e.g. organize the proceeding, choose practical examples, lead the discussion etc. It is compulsory to talk the concept over with the instructor (please arrange an appointment at least one week before the session to be hosted). Each session should include a short individual presentation on the thematic focus (~20 minutes) as well as a group work and discussion.

3)      Participation in the symposium „Venice in Medial Imaginations” (February 7th-9th 2019). Each participant will write an essay (approx. 2500 words) on a self-chosen topic in relation to the conference papers. Due date for the essay is March 1st 2019.

Further study achievements:

- Active participation and contribution to the discussions
- Background Reading: Adams, P. C. (2009): Geographies of Media and Communication. Malden.

Additional information:
The seminar is the basis for the project seminar “Applied Media Geography” (summer term) in which we will deepen our understanding of media geography by focusing more on the interrelation of specific media forms and geographic topics. Therefore, we will create research blogs in order to deal with specific issues of media geography in a critical manner (further information will follow in the last meeting of the winter term).
