This class will examine the feeling of nostalgia from a cultural point of view. We will think about socio-historical but also psycho-biological reasons. In this class, we will look at a plethora of cultural products tinged with nostalgia but also specifically produced for nostalgic effect. We will discuss the “structure of [that] feeling” (Raymond Williams) in the context of the decline of the British Empire but will also take into account contemporary examples of post-Brexit Britain.
