This seminar focuses on the formal aspects of Renaissance drama, by which I do not (or do not only) mean the generic identity of plays, but also the many diverse structural micro-patterns into which playwrights arrange their texts (plot, causality, conflict and contrast) and the way they distribute information overall. We will be reading these plays “like actors” – i.e. with their performance in mind – to gain a more precise understanding of the way they work and are likely to affect audiences.
Recommended reading list:
Required reading: Thomas Middleton, The Revenger's Tragedy
W. Shakespeare, Measure for Measure
Please avail yourselves of good, critical editions of these plays (Mermaid, Oxford World's Classics, Arden Edition).
Additional materials to be distributed electronically. ALL STUDENTS are expected to have read and prepared ALL SET TEXTS.
