This interactive lecture will familiarise students with the basic theories of Cultural Studies. It will define the field and the meanings of culture first and then discuss theories connected with power, ideology, and identity - including those of gender, race, and class.
Students will be asked to prepare one key text (usually an essay or an extract from a longer work) for each session. This text will then be debated in depth and applied to a cultural object.
Materials for the course will be on Reader.
The lecture concludes with a 45-minute written exam in the final session. A mock exam will be made available during the semester.
