“Slavery unfortunately did not end with its abolition in any country in the world,” writes Laura Murphy in Survivors of Slavery. Hence, stories about the captivity and enslavement of Africans, American Indians, and European settlers in the Americas have a long literary tradition.  They usually give an account of the experience of a person who was enslaved or held captive during a war, raid, or for reasons of forced labor. Both literary genres, the African American slave narrative and the Indian captivity narrative, depict realities of oppression that shaped cultural and political discourses of the nineteenth century.

In this course, we will read narratives of former slaves alongside and in comparison to stories of Indian captivity. We will analyze how the two narrative genres depict and contest the institution of slavery as well as the policy of Indian Removal that both dominated cultural, political, and legal discourses in the nineteenth century.

Since the phenomenon of human trafficking is still current today, we will also discuss a brief selection of contemporary accounts of modern-day slavery in the global economy to trace the – regrettably – continuing topics of bondage and confinement.

Note that this course will be taught exclusively on Moodle (lms.uni-mainz.de). In this asynchronous course, we will work with brief presentations as introductions to the topics, study guides and assignments on primary texts, occasional online discussion forums, and links to videos and other online material. At the end of a topic section, we can synchronously (and voluntarily) meet on Big Blue Button to possibly share ideas and discuss the texts and worksheets live.
