This graduate course discusses new methodologies and theoretical approaches in Early American Studies. We will study a sample of books published in recent years. The monographs and collections of essays selected for this course have contributed in programmatic ways to our understanding of early American literature, culture, history in such fields as Native American studies, ethnic and racial studies, archipelagic and environmental studies, religious studies, print culture, history and the archive, etc. The aim of this course is to practice critical book analysis. In doing so, we survey the development of a specific field of research in American Studies. Participants have to give book presentations and learn how to write scholarly and publishable reviews.
Course material and a list of book reviews will be available at the beginning of the term.
