Contents:
This course will analyse the development and disintegration of the British Empire, from its origins in the early acquisition of overseas colonies, to its collapse in the twentieth century and the subsequent formation of the Commonwealth of Nations. The course will analyse the project of Empire building in political as well as cultural terms, with a clear focus on the impact that imperial ideology had on the countries which came under British rule during this period. The course will also apply theories from the interdisciplinary field of postcolonial studies as a way of considering the full impact of colonisation.
