Moreover, historians sometimes speak of the Elizabethan era as a ‘Golden Age’: how is this “brave new world” mirrored in the culture and life of the time?

Very many possible themes, therefore… opening up a plethora of ideas for your study and term papers!

The method will include

·         input from participants in the form of uploaded briefing mini-papers to be studied in advance for in-class discussion

·         weekly small-group brain-storming online as well as full-group discussion in class of scene-by-scene questions on Shakespeare’s Othello (please get the PRINT version of the Arden 3rd series volume, edited by EAJ Honigmann, in the 2nd (Bloomsbury 2016) edition with the introduction by Ayanna Thompson: the print version is ISBN-13: 9781472571762 or ISBN-10: 1472571762 (price ca. €10 e.g. from www.buecher.de)

·         weekly input from a podcast on aspects of Elizabethan life, society and attitudes, each podcast thematically tied to certain artefacts in London’s British Museum

·         a term paper for people taking the class under the majority of exam regulations, which in some people’s case will also be the module exam – check your exam regulations SOONER rather than LATER for requirements! This can be about the various topics that come up during the semester, but also on Othello and/or Elizabethan theatre.

Our work on Othello will help us acquire further insights into aspects of race, ethnicity, sex & gender, morality & religion, and social hierarchy at the time, as well as an appreciation of the function of drama (and why the Puritans so hated it!) and the nature of performance on the outdoor and indoor Elizabethan stages, together with the major developments in this latter respect in the last years of the 16th century.

We will be working via the LMS platform, ‘meeting’ virtually via Big Blue Button during our formal class-hour for full-class discussions of prepared material. If access to university libraries is restricted, we will use the JGU’s various electronic possibilities to enable you to access relevant publications.
