The goal of this course is to study the different ways in which (non-)fictional texts and the visual arts interact.Setting out on the aesthetic principle of ekphrasis - any form of writing about art - this seminar will also deal with novels that have artists (real, budding and wannabe) as their protagonists and reflect on the principles of representation that distinguish visual and verbal art, as well as with texts that aim to instruct readers in artistic practices and the ability to understand how visual art works.
