This seminar will take a close look at the way historical fiction has developed as a genre. In particular, we will be discussing the historical novel and the way it frequently reflects the cultural values of the time it is written, rather than the period in which it is set. We will also consider the way contemporary historical fiction foregrounds minor narratives, effectively creating textual space for the 'hidden histories' of marginalised groups and communities.
On this course, we will be discussing four novels: Waverley by Walter Scott (1814) A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens (1859) I Claudius by Robert Graves (1934) and The Miniaturist by Jessie Burton (2014).
