Hawai'i was the last territory to become a state of the United States in 1959. It is the objective of the course to show how James Cook's  "discovery" of Hawai'i and the subsequent interest of the British, the French, and, most of all, the USA in the islands reshaped Hawai'i in terms of its social structure, culture and religion, ethnic composition and its political system. We will also look at the differing historiographies of the indigenous population and that of the colonizers.
