Contents:
This lecture aims at providing students with a solid understanding of key elements in cultural theory from the relations of culture and power conceptualised by philosophers such as Gramsci and Foucault to contemporary developments. Students will relate theoretical terms to past and current media phenomena, institutions and practices as well as to social and political issues. In the process they will develop an understanding of theoretical approaches in cultural studies.

This interactive online lecture will familiarise students with the basic theories of cultural studies. It will define the field and the meanings of culture first and then discuss theories connected with power, ideology, and identity - including those of gender, sexuality, race, and class.

Students will be asked to read one key text (usually an essay or an extract from a longer work) in each session.
