This is a course on the history of labor and immigration during the second half of the twentieth century in the United States. We will trace the changing world of labor by looking at the development of modern business, the rise of corporations and capitalism, urbanization and industrialization. We will look at workers’ discontent, protests, strife for better conditions, and the development of unions. We will complicate the picture by studying the “labor question” in conjunction with immigration. Did the rise of U.S. economic power depend on the influx of cheap immigrant labor? Or did imported workers undermine the established wage standards of American workers? Did American ingenuity build new industries or was it the know-how and skills of immigrants and imported technologies? What role did racial animosity and competition between work gangs of different national origins play in the developing labor market? We will look at topics like working class culture and solidarity, gender and ethnic division within the working class, the circulation of labor migrants throughout the United State, and connections between labor, immigration, and American imperialism.
