This survey course introduces students to images of gender and ethnicity in American literature from the mid-nineteenth to the twenty-first century. Course readings include a variety of genres, such as speeches, short stories, and narratives that explore literary gender and ethnic identities. The main goal of this course is to familiarize students with representations of these socially constructed concepts and to analyze their significance in different pieces and periods of American literature.
