In this course we will consider theoretical approaches to reading 20th and 21st century magazines, both commercial 'mainstream' publications and independent ones.
The theoretical and methodological focus will be on affect and the body, but we will also look at other approaches. Fashion is central to lifestyle magazines and the display of fashion on the pages will be the main site to try out analytical readings o spreads. However, we will also consider other parts of the magazine and other magazine genres, like the 'mindstyle' magazine and its discourse of 'feelings' and 'emotions'.
Given the premise of the course, students should be prepared to read and engage with theoretical texts, complete small tasks as homework, and give a presentation. The course will use MS Teams for synchronous sessions and Moodle for asynchronous tasks.
