When the Berlin Wall came down and the Cold War came to an end, most observers saw the U.S.-led West as the victor in the stand-off that had dominated international relations since World War II. In many ways, however, U.S. society today looks very different from the America that had emerged in the decades after 1945, suggesting that the end of the Cold War also wrought fundamental changes in American society itself. This lecture explores how the Cold War shaped U.S. politics, economy and culture at home. In the course of the semester we will look at, among other things, the legacy of World War II, the Red Scare, the Civil Rights movement, the rise of the military-industrial complex, the domestic repercussions of the Vietnam war, and the rise of the New Christian Right.
