Requirements / organisational issues:
This lecture is based on the lecture "Physics 5b (Nuclear- and Particlephysics)" and aims to provide a deeper understanding of the fundamental constituents of matter and their interactions.

Update (27.10.20): For the organization moodle is used, the corresponding link is https://lms.uni-mainz.de/moodle/course/view.php?id=21253.

Contents:
This lectures gives and introduction to the experimental (and some theoretical) aspects of the strong, weak and electroweak interactions. In particular, we discuss the major experiments that gave new insights in the fundamental principles of nature. The following topics are covered:

  • Kinematics of particle scatterings at high collisions
  • Calculation of cross-sections with Feynman rules
  • Symmetries and gauge principle
  • Precision tests of the standard model
  • Higgs mechanism
  • CP violation in the quark and the neutrino sector
  • Search for physics beyond the standard model

Recommended reading list:

  • Mark Thomson, 'Modern Particle Physics', Cambridge University Press
  • David Griffiths, 'Introduction to Elementary Particles', 2nd edition, Wiley, 2008
  • Francis Halzen and Alan D. Martin, 'Quarks and Leptons', Wiley, 1984
  • Donald H. Perkins, 'Introduction to High Energy Physics', 4th edition, Cambridge University Press, 2000
  • Christoph Berger, 'Elementarteilchenphysik', Springer, 2006
  • Peter Schmüser, 'Feynman-Graphen und Eichtheorien für Experimentalphysiker', Springer, 1995

Digital teaching:
Update (27.10.20): The lecture will now be held fully online only,

We will probably use BigBlueButton. The participants are being informed about the details in due time before the start of the lecture. For the organization moodle is used, the corresponding link is https://lms.uni-mainz.de/moodle/course/view.php?id=21253.
