In this course, we move through the history of the English language backwards: starting today (or in a period linguists refer to as Late Modern English), we move backwards through time and see how the language changes as we move further and further from our time. What makes this course particularly interesting is that we focus on a single genre. This means we do not look at all kinds of texts from the Bible to poetry to letters, as is usually done in these kinds of courses. Instead, we will become specialists on recipes! This allows us to not only learn about language change but to also experience cultural changes. We will witness how the understanding of the human body changed, how ingredients became available and then knowledge about them was lost. From a linguistic perspective, the changes in the tone of the instructions and the amount (or lack of!) information provided are particularly interesting.
