Having long been seen as chiefly representative of (American) absurdism, Albee’s work has since been interpreted in more varied ways. The important role his work has played on stages in German-speaking countries, its significance for and beyond American theater, and its influence on contemporary drama are important aspects to be discussed. In Germany particularly, his work has been read as philosophical, a reception marked as much by the potential of his dramatic texts as by the necessities of the post-war theater scene. In this seminar, we will read and analyze his major plays, explore their contexts and theoretical ramifications, and discuss the significance and role of drama in contemporary culture.
