The aim of this seminar is to introduce students to the history of the English language, and to take a closer look at one period, that of Middle English. After a brief overview of the history of English, the focus will be on the structure of Middle English and the changes in phonology, orthography, grammar and lexis within the period, as well as dialectal variation and the impact of language contact with French and Scandinavian. Students will learn to read and understand Middle English texts in their historical context, and practise the linguistic analysis of a range of different genres. These include an extract from The Peterboroough Chronicle, a selection from the best known literary text of the period, Chaucer‘s Cantebury Tales, and letters from family correspondences.
