Requirements / organisational issues:
The course will discuss Britain's role in the world in connection with its self-perception. Notions of an "island nation" will be contrasted with the realities of globalisation that started in prehistoric times. Britain's self-definition in connection with its constitutive elements England, Scotland, Ireland, and Wales will be an issue - as will be what happened to Britain once it began to expand into colonies and eventually an Empire. Lastly, Britain in the age of contemporary globalisation will be examined, including the effects of devolution and Brexit.

Compulsory attendance:
There is no compulsory attendance, but regular participation and/or consultation of the course materials is highly recommended - especially for students doing the exam at the end of the lecture series.

Contents:
Britain's self-perception and role in the world - from the beginnings to the present
