Course A (Kruschinski): Understanding Digital Campaigning using Computational Communication Science
Be it for public discourse, political campaigning or the coverage of politics in the news - citizens, media and political actors all over the world continue to embrace digital communication. As a consequence, social scientists are confronted with an increasing amount of available data sources and data. To understand the role of digital media or identify and assess the effects of digital communication on citizens it is crucial to adapt novel – so called computational – methods to social science research.
Using the example of digital campaigning, students will be introduced to approaches like automated content analysis, social network analysis or the use of digital trace data which help to understand digital communication, its usage and impact in a datafied society. In this manner, students will learn how political actors use digital media to inform, mobilize or persuade citizens and also get to know important computational methods for its measurement and evaluation.
