08.128.738 Particle Physics

Course offering details

Instructors: Univ.-Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Gradl; Dr. Christoph Redmer

Event type: Lecture/practice class

Displayed in timetable as: 08.128.738

Hours per week: 4

Credits: 6,0

Language of instruction: Englisch

Min. | Max. participants: - | -

Requirements / organisational issues:
Prerequisites:  basic knowledge of the fundamentals of particle and nuclear physics, as e.g. contained in the lecture "Experimentalphysik 5b (Nuclear and Particle Physics)"

Language of instruction will be English.

Contents:
The lecture deals with the fundamental constituents of matter and the interactions between these constituents.  The electromagnetic, strong, and weak interactions are explored, both from a phenomenological and from the experimental side.  In particular, the lecture will deal with these topics:

  • Overview of experimental methods (particle accelerators, detectors)
  • Kinematics of scattering processes at high energies
  • Calculation of cross sections (Feynman diagrams, perturbation theory)
  • Representative processes of the electromagnetic, strong, and weak interactions
  • Symmetries and local gauge invariance
  • Standard Model of particle physics, precision tests
  • Spontaneous breaking of the electroweak symmetry via the Brout-Englert-Higgs mechanism
  • Quantum mechanical mixing, CP violation in the quark and neutrino sector
  • Search for physics beyond the Standard Model
