Requirements / organisational issues:
Basic knowledge of the fundamentals of particle and nuclear physics, as e.g. contained in the lecture "Experimentalphysik 5b (Nuclear and Particle Physics)". This lecture contributes to a deeper understanding of the fundamental building blocks of matter and the interactions between those.
Language of instruction will be English.
Contents:
The lecture deals with the fundamental constituents of matter and the interactions between these constituents. The electromagnetic, strong, and weak interactions are explored, both from a phenomenological and from the experimental side. In particular, the lecture will deal with the following topics:
- Overview of experimental methods (particle accelerators, detectors)
- Kinematics of scattering processes at high energies
- Calculation of cross sections (Feynman diagrams, perturbation theory)
- Representative processes of the electromagnetic, strong, and weak interactions
- Symmetries and local gauge invariance
- Standard Model of particle physics, precision tests
- Spontaneous breaking of the electroweak symmetry via the Brout-Englert-Higgs mechanism
- Quantum mechanical mixing, CP violation in the quark and neutrino sector
- Search for physics beyond the Standard Model
Recommended reading list:
- M. Thomson, Modern Particle Physics, Cambridge University Press (2013)
- D. Griffiths, Introduction to Elementary Particles, Wiley-VCH (2008)
- F, Halzen and A. D. Martin, Quarks and leptons: an introductory course in modern particle physics, Wiley, 1984
- Ch. Berger, Elementarteilchenphysik (4th ed), Springer (2014)
Further reading suggestions will be given during the actual course.
Digital teaching:
Further information, extra material for the lectures as well as for the exercises etc. will be provided via the JGU e-learning platform LMS.
Participants registered for this course in Jogustine should be granted access to the course on LMS automatically.
