Requirements / organisational issues:
Solid state Physics deals with the physical principles of a large number of chemically bound atoms in the solid state of matter. The large number of atoms/ electrons leads to a large number of collective phenomena, ranging from structure formation over charge transport to magnetism and superconductivity. This requires the introduction of models to capture the implicit cooperative behaviour. Despite many simplifications and approximations these allow for the quantitative description of many typical material properties in condensed matter. It thereby enables also the understanding of recent developments in research and technology.

This course will typically consist of 2 SWS of classical lecture plus 2 SWS of combined blended learning and exercise course. This means that the students are required to study part of the content of the lecture at home based on provided learning material. The associated additional study time is compensated by on-site only exercises, which will be solved in small groups supported by the lecturers/ TAs. Students are expected to participate actively and present recaps or homework spontaneously at least once during the semester to be admitted to the written exam.
