Builds on Theo 3 - QM

Contents:
Atomic, Molecular and Optocal (AMO) physics has a long history - from building the foundations of quantum mechanics to continuing today at the cutting edge of science. The development of AMO physics is fueled by revolutionary advances in our ability to use light to manipulate, control and measure the properties of atoms and molecules.

Starting with hydrogen, we will understand the structure of atoms, their interaction with external fields (Zeeman and Stark effect), and learn how laser spectroscopy is used to study hydrogen to determine fundamental physical constants and more. We will look at the helium atoms to understand the effect of more than one electron. Alkali atoms and more complicated heavier atoms will complete the atomic physics section.

The 2nd part of the lecture is concerned with principles of laser spectroscopy as the main tool to study fundamental  physics in atoms and molecules. We will learn some techniques of laser spectroscopy, and I will report on our measurements in hydrogen and lithium. A lab tour will give you insight in our everyday work at JGU.

The lecture concludes with some fundamentals of molecular physics, important for understanding key features of chemisrty, biolog, climate science and more.

The lecture builds on Theory 3 - QM.

Recommended reading list:
Christopher J. Foot "Atomic Physics"
Demtröder "Laser Spectroscopy"
Hertel Schulz "Atoms, Molecules and Optical Physics"

Additional information:
I will deliver a regular lecture, not the (not so successful) "flipped classroom" project I attempted last year.

That said, I will provide you with some (short) suggestions for reading before the lecture. This should help you to prepare the lecture and allow you to enter the lecture with prior knowledge.

The reading is however voluntary. You will get a "real lecture".

Digital teaching:
The lecture will be a regular lecture with me in the seminar room, writing on a tablet.
At the same, my lecture will be zoomed and recorded for later study through Panopto.
All exercises and extra material will go through LMS.
