Have you ever wished to experience a beam time at a particle accelerator?

As a special concept, in this course a classical lecture format is combined with a beam time at the Mainz Microtron MAMI in order to give students the possibility to prepare a physics measurement at a particle acclerator, to run the beam time independently and finally analyze the data. 
In the lecture part we will discuss timely topics from the field of hadron and particle physics. This will be complemented with chapters on statistics and data analysis, which will serve as an optimal preparation for the MAMI beam time.

Contents:
In the lecture part we will discuss the following topics:

The role of symmetries and local gauge invariance
The Standard Model and precision tests (muon g-2)
Electroweak Symmetry Breaking and Brout-Englert-Higgs-Mechanism
Quantum-mechanical mixing and CP violation in the quark and neutrino sector
Search for solutions for phenomena which cannot be explained in the Standard Model

In the second part of the course, students will gain hands-on experience with particle physics experiments and research in this area. Students will attend interactive seminars and will learn how to operate the analysis program ROOT.
