The event covers the following topics:
• Wave optics: polarization, diffraction, interference, elementary Fourier optics (optical filtering,
Image formation), coherence, optical interferometers (Mach-Zehnder, Sagnac, Michelson-Morley),
Evanescent waves, resonators (Fabry-Perot interferometer), Gaussian beam optics, photo effect, black body radiation
• Matter waves: plane waves, wave packets, dispersion relation, propagation, measurement process / interpretation of the wave function, diffraction/interference of matter waves, atom interferometer, neutron interferometer
• Elementary quantum mechanics: spin, Stern-Gerlach experiment, spin, polarization, entangled
Systems (photon pairs), which way experiments
• Some quantum mechanical systems: harmonic oscillator, tunnel effect, H atom (basics), spectroscopy (basics).
Recommended reading list:
There is a wide variety of textbooks and I will take approaches from different ones.
Well-known standard works that can also be borrowed from the library or available as an eBook:
Demtröder, Experimental Physics 2 & 3,
Otten, Repetitorium Experimental Physics;
Hecht, optics;
Additional information:
The lecture will partly contain reading assignments, which must be prepared independently before the next lecture.
Questions about the texts can and should be discussed together during the lecture.
